Wairau defeated Celtic in the 3rd Grade 40 over final. This report and photo provided by Wairau CC.
Wairau finished 188 all out in the 40th over. Braden Jessop anchored the innings with a well compiled 41 assisted by Mitch Gee with 24, Ben Alexander 19 and a late knock of 20 by Tony Alexander. Some good bowling and fielding by Celtic saw Wairau lose regular wickets including three run outs. Best bowling figures were Edan Fitzpatrick with 3 for 35 off his 8 overs.
In reply Celtic were well in advance of the required run rate at the 20 over mark at 106 for 4, with strong hitting from Patrick Moran (57), Olly Lawson (25) and Edan Fitzpatrick (18). However with 39 runs required in the last 12 overs, the run out of Michael Fitzpatrick and the big wicket of Patrick Moran brought Wairau back into the game. Both groups of supporters were on the edge for their chairs as Celtic reached 180 before losing their 9th wicket. In the end a quick fire 11 from the last man out Caleb Young, wasn’t enough when he was caught by a diving Ben Alexander off the bowling of Tom Sloan in the 39th over leaving Celtic 3 runs short.
It was a fitting final of the Wine Works 3rd Grade 40 competition that went down to wire.
Wairau 188 (Braden Jessop 41, Mitch Gee 24, Tony Alexander 20, Ben Alexander 19, and Edan Fitzpatrick 3/35). In reply Celtic 186 (Patrick Moran 57, Olly Lawson 25, Edan Fitzpatrick 18, Braden Jessop 2/32 and Cameron Collins 2/16)
